Better to go to appt: Ask your dentist for suggestions on medication they you an take for pain control. Ask if the can apply a local anesthetic to the area(s) if it starts to hurt too much. Usually scaling is a bit uncomfortable. Extent of material to be cleaned determines time and perhaps discomfort. Make sure to thoroughly floss and brush twice per day once scaling is complete to prevent recurrence.
