A member asked:

Does the latest large study research support that tinnitus originates from the inner ear or the brain or it is not yet known?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Brain: The present concept of tinnitus is that it is caused by a synchronous discharge of electrical activity from the central auditory nervous system, eg. the dorsal cochlear nucleus. Keep in mind that not only does hearing loss cause the perception of sound in the ear. but there are other causes of tinnitus, including, TMD, cervical disease, even dental abscess. So it is a perception of sound in ear.
