AIDS is late HIV: AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. One may have HIV for many, many years before finally developing AIDS which is late stage HIV infection. The HIV and AIDS test are the same and may not be positive for a few weeks after exposure although other special tests may become positive earlier.
