Infection or trauma: Relatively recent onset of pain behind the ear can be related to infection or trauma. Infection of the "middle ear" or ear canal can result in pain, swelling, tenderness, fever, discharge, hearing loss, redness behind the ear. If infection is suspected, pain of this nature should be evaluated by a doctor and antibiotics would be prescribed.
