See Your Doctor: 2 yr old with "red swollen outer ear". Insect bites to the outer ear can cause marked redness, swelling, pain. Symptoms are self-limited over 48-72 hrs. However, trauma to the outer ear is a medical emergency due to excessive bleeding causing damage to the cartilage. This can occur from falls in children. Your son should see his doctor now to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment.
