Formula/breast first: It is not necessary to offer water to a 5 month old infant. If more fluids are desired, it is best to give formula or nurse the baby. If he is consistently taking over 32-40 ounces of these daily, then water can be offered to avoid overfeeding and excessive calories. May also be time to consider introduction of solid foods, but babies do not need plain water.
