Send if it recurs: The consequences of missing a cancer disguised as a chalazion are serious, but you have a window period if it recurs and is then sent for study. This is an okay practice if, and only if, your ophthalmologist was confident enough that it was a classic chalazion to forego histopathology the first time. If a recurrence is sent, you'll be safe.
