Sinusitis: Neti pots are used for nasal and sinus irrigation and are safe if sterile isotonic saline is used. Boiled salt water that has been cooled to lukewarm is safe from the amoeba Naegleria fowleri and the risk of meningoencephalitis. Many pharmacies sell over the counter saline nasal spray as an alternative.

Neti pots can be: very beneficial. The issue is that sterile water or premixed packs should be used. Boiled water (which is than cooled) should be safe. In 2011 there were two case reports in Louisiana in which people who used tap water in neti pots & where N. fowleri was found in their home water supply developed Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri. The risk if VERY low.
