Yes, it is unusual so food poisoning may not be the case.

Classically lots of vomiting causes loss of chloride & produces metabolic alkalosis, but there uncommonly have been cases where repeated vomiting combined with marked dehydration which causes such loss of bicarbonate that it results in metabolic acidosis.
