Many Things: I'm sorry that you are so uncomfortable. The pain is usually a sign of increased disease activity. The best way to treat the pain is to get the disease under better control. A rheumatologist is experienced to help you with this. There are many old and newer medications that can help. They will also make sure the pain is not coming from osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia which can coexist with RA.

What is the cause?: The best thing you can do is discuss the situation with a rheumatologist. You need to determine if the pain is due to joint damage or uncontrolled inflammation. That makes a huge difference.
