Distance or time.: The distance you travel isn't as important as the time spent engaged in aerobic activity. For cardiovascular fitness benefit, the heart has to elevated to an appropriate level for at least twenty minutes. You'll notice that as you progress in your exercise, you'll walk farther in that twenty minutes, so you would have to increase your distance to still walk twenty minutes at least.
