Just tell him it is very common, the only thing that may hurt is having to numb the toe, but that is quick and if done by someone that does this frequently the discomfort will be minimal. It will feel better almost right away after the procedure. This is done most often by a podiatrist, try to find someone who is good with people and can put him at ease.
