Only is painful: Fractures of the coccyx or tail bone can occur and can be quite painful. Several muscles attach to the tail bone and contracting these muscles could cause the bone to shift and/or crack. But as long as you don't have pain, you can leave it alone. If there is pain, this should be checked out by your doctor. Rarely the tailbone can be excised if it is causing a lot of pain.
