You're right: This isn't normal. Your joint dysfunction is probably due to the cartilaginous disc in the joint being out of position. See both Oral Surgeon and Orthodontist about recapturing the disc and alienating any occlusal (bite) factors that may be contributing to your TMD.

You need: to get a second opinion about your situation. It is not normal to have that minimal of a jaw opening. Ideally a TMJ or TMD specialist would be able to accurately diagnose your problem.
