Physical therapy: The symptoms tend to describe a 'closed lock' or possibly trismus. Physical therapy is needed now: hot, wet compresses to the joint area. A muscle relaxant is needed (you'll probably need a prescription for this). Manipulation of the rear part of the lower jaw, by a person trained to do it, can help. Anti-inflammatories (aspirin, aleve, (naproxen) ibuprofen, etc.) can help. See a dentist with TMJ knowledge.

Jaw Repositioning: Oftentimes the dentist can reposition the jaw by pressing down and back on the jaw by placing his fingers on the teeth and under the mandible. This will usually fix the problem instantly. Muscle relaxants like Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) and heat therapy (heating pad or warm towel) along with antiinflammatory medications may also be prescribed. If nothing works you may need to see an oral surgeon.
