For most folk 8 hrs: Some careers and work demands require night shift work and some people can acclimate to it. But we are diurnal creatures so night sleep is easier and better for most of us. Again, most healthy adults need 8 hrs per day but some can do w/ a bit less and some do need more depending on individual issues.
