Aspiration: How do you know it is in your lungs? If you cough forcefully enough, you may be able to dislodge the food particle. If the discomfort goes away, rest assured. Rarely, a foreign object may lead to an infection or blockage of part of the lung. You may need to see a pulmonologist to have the food particle removed. See a doctor as soon as possible.

Corn Aspiration: Symptoms of aspiration include: 1) Frequent coughing from irritation of your airways 2) Shortness or breath or coughing up blood. 3) May progress to pneumonia type symptoms. Unless it is causing complications there is no reason to be concerned about a cooked corn kernel. A piece of uncooked popcorn or nondegradable object may be more likely to cause problems especially in a child.
