Not necessary: Both procedures can easily be performed with local anesthetic.

Put under: Generally root canal treatment can be done with local anesthetics. However, some people have extreme dental anxiety and cannot or do not want to have dental treatment done unless under IV sedation.

No: If you are ok to get a filling without being "put under", you will be fine getting a root canal also. Very few people need more than local anesthesia!

See your dentist: is a common procedure, generally performed under local anesthesia, intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anesthesia by a specially trained dentist or endodontist. Often root canal is the best solution to keep your tooth for a lifetime. See your dentist for x-ray and evaluation. Most dentist know how to do a root canal.
