One out of many: The female needs several functioning parts to conceive and carry a pregnancy to term. Ovaries to generate the eggs, healthy Fallopian tubes that can carry them to the uterus, and a uterus that can prepare its walls to receive a fertilized egg. Take out healthy tubes (or tie them off)and you still have all the hormones cycling to prepare the uterus--giving rise to "monthlys".
