Increased marrow: Hypertrophy refers to an increase in mass of an organ. An overworked muscle that enlarges is hypertrophied. For bone marrow, it means there is an increased quantity of blood making cells in the marrow. It does not tell you if those cells are normal blood making cells or a sign of disease. Persistent blood loss, for example, could cause an increase (hypertrophy) in erythroid precursors.
