Do space maintainers hurt?

Should not: A space maintainer should be passive meaning it should not be moving teeth.

Usually no.: Most space maintainers are made with a wire soldered onto a metal band that fits around a tooth next to the space. Placement can push on the gum tissue around this tooth when placed in the mouth and can be a little sore to start. This usually subsides as long as the area is kept clean.
