Can't answer...: ...without seeing his operative or pathology report. There is no way to predict second-hand when his gallbladder turned gangrenous, or how close it was to perforating, based on the absence you've provided of any clinical information. Sorry, but this is a good question to re-direct to his surgeon (who was actually there).
