Vocal cord issue: Hoarseness in children is often the result of acid reflux, which can cause chronic irritation of the vocal cords. Less commonly, vocal cord damage from a procedure such as intubation, or polyps can create a similar sound. A doctor that specializes in this region, such as an ENT, should be able to clarify this for you.
