Face hurts: When was his last dental check-up? Assuming no bumps or bruises that you don't know about, I would suggest a visit to the dentist (Pedodonist or General Dentist who sees children of that age) and if the exam in negative, a visit to the Pediatrician. It doesn't sound like this is the type of situation that warrants an ER visit.

He is teething: The facial pain is from the growing first adult molar ( calked the six year old molar) ,they usually make a bulge in the gums behind the last baby molar on each side,there are lots of OTC meds for that purpose,that alleviate the pain associated with eruption pressure on the gums.
