Oral Biopsy: We often can't determine what an unusual growth or lesion is without actually biopsying it and having an Oral Pathologist examine it under the microscope. Then we know what it is and whether or not it requires treatment and if so what type of treatment. In a similar fashion, your MD can't determine if you have High Blood Pressure merely by looking at you and without actually taking it.

2 Reasons I give: When I recommend a biopsy for a patient, I tell them there are two reasons. The first is to confirm a diagnosis of the affected area or lesion. The second is to hopefully let the patient rest at ease if the lesion is not a malignant lesion.
