What helps prepare for natural disasters?

Many things: Storing some water, canned foods, a means of heating things, having flashlights and lanterns, means of dealing with predators, having hunting gear, tents, alternative means of transport, and communication equipment will all be helpful. There are books and web sites on this subject.

Make a plan!: The best way to prepare for disaster is to have a plan. Think about the disasters that are most likely to affect you -- snowstorms vs hurricanes, for example -- and then search the internet for advice on how to how to prepare, such as setting aside fresh water and have some healthy but storage friendly foods set aside -- like whole grains, beans, and canned vegetables.

72 hour kit: I strongly encourage you (everyone) to make up a 72 hr preparedness kit for them self and each member of the family living with them. Start making it in advance. It will get you through that first 72 hours before most emergency teams are mobilized. see: http://www.urbachletter.com/0306/ComprehensiveChecklist.htm
