A good start: Until you have the courage to do a proper exam, feel your breasts periodically. Further, be aware -- if you check your breasts regularly and systematically, your chances of dying of breast cancer are very low, and even the need for a mastectomy may be considerably reduced. First step: Easiest way to self exam is in the shower with the hand on the side where the breast is to be evaluated, held behind the head. The flat fingers in the opposite hand move in a circular clockwise motion. Then this is repeated lying down. Any lumpiness in the shower disappears while lying down where a true lump enlarges as the breast falls back in the supine position.
