Can a mri scan reveal if there is a significant loss of neurons ?

No: An MRI of the brain may show a loss of cerebral matter which is associated with aging and dementia. An MRI of the body will show nerves but not nerve function or demyelination. If there is nerve loss a conduction study will be helpful
