H-P-T axis: Hi. It's an interplay in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (H-P-T) axis. The hypothalamus secretes thyrotropin-releasing factor (TRF), which stimulates the pituitary to release thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which stimulates the thyroid gland to take up iodine, organify, make, and release thyroid hormones (mostly T4, but a little T3 (liothyronine) too). The thyroid hormones feed back to suppress TRF & TSH.
