Not enough: Research isin progress. Much success depends on resources Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neuromuscular disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure and the average life span after diagnosis is 2-5 years. ALS takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe, and it can strike anyone. Better supportive measures have increased somewhat life span.

Not too much: We understand some of the epidemiology, and know of familial cases of genetic dysfunction, but still have very little idea how to handle therapeutically, most of the patients, other than palliation. Our one approved item, Riluzole, delays need for tracheostomy, but does not affect weakness or eventual onset of death.
