Topical antibiotics: Soframycin is a neomycin (an aminoglycoside antibiotic), specifically neomycin B. It can be used a couple of times a day, but if this isn't proving effective, then a doctor should become involved in the management of the case. Indeed, some absorption through the skin occurs, and you don't want this medication building up in the system where it could have an effect (especially the kidneys).

Never: Neomycin does not treat or prevent any infection. A few years ago it was "honored" as "allergen of the year" because it caused so many allergic reactions. When it is applied to surgical wounds and compared to vaseline the wounds with vaseline do better.
