A member asked:

Are excruciating foot cramps and sharp shooting debilitating pains from butt to foot common side effects a month after surgery done to 5th metatarsal?

Post op: No. That is not common. Cramps and shooting pain could muscle or nerve related pains. Think about it if it is due to using crutches or walking on a cast or just having to move around in a way your body is not used to.

Shooting leg pains: Pains shooting down the leg are most likely 'sciatica' and may or may not relate to your recent foot surgery. When a nerve gets irritated or 'pinched' it is going to 'fire off' and produce pains like you describe. Certain things cause sciatica like a herniated disc and I would recommend getting this checked out ASAP. Perhaps 'hobbling' around after foot surgery you 'popped' something in ur back

Foot surgery: No. Those post op issues are not common to any foot or ankle procedures. There are a whole host of differential diagnoses that need to be ruled out.... Please consult your surgeon and your primary care physician as soon as possible.
