If a person has radioactive treatment of the thyroid, how long are they radioactive for, can it affect other people?

It depends: It depends on the dose and the people you want to protect and the duration of proximity with the people. Higher the dose, recent the dose and younger the people and too close the proximity and longer the contact will affect proportionately. The biological half life I-131 is only couple of days to one week. So use your judgement. There is no need to worry unless you are breast feeding an infant .
