You can: be allergic to Novocain, (procaine) it is an ester, buy very unlikely to lidocaine, it is an amide.

True allergy rare: There are a number of different kinds of local anesthetic, so a true allergy to one may still allow you to have another one. Most reactions to local anesthesia (such as heart pounding or a panicky feeling) are actually reactions to epi that may have been used with the injection. If you think you had an allergic reaction, see an allergist for skin testing to see what is safe for you.

Yes/no: While Novocaine allergies do occur occasionally, true allergies to lidocaine are extremely rare. If this has actually been documented by an allergist, there are few good alternatives. Many people think they are allergic due to rapid heart rate- this is actually a normal reaction to epinephrine commonly used together.
