To a limited degree: Not all medications used for this procedure are FDA approved. For example Depo-Medrol from Pfizer/Pharmacia is widely used "off-label" to treat back pain, but not FDA approved. Moreover, FDA requires label changes to warn of rare, but serious neurologic problems after epidural corticosteroid injections for pain. Always talk to your physician about the risk/benefit ratio. Take care.

The medication: used for epidural injection is an FDA approved medication, but this indication is not approved for its label. Once a medication is approved it can be used for any indication doctors please, the FDA doesn't practice medicine, but the company can't promote the usage unless on label. It is very expensive and takes years to get a label indication.
