Depends: Some ovarian cysts are a normal part of your monthly cycle. Each month, before you ovulate, you produce an ovarian cyst. These types of functional cysts can cause some pain but go away on their own. Other types of cysts are persistent and grow larger. They cause inflammation and stretch the capsule of the ovary. If a cyst is persistent over several months and is painful, surgery is an option
