Likely not: It is not uncommon, at all, for a normal menstruating female to develop a 5cm ovarian cyst. The vast majority of the time, the cyst will go away on its own without any treatment. The only reason to have to have surgery is if the patient is in severe pain or if there is a strong likelihood of cancer.
