Yes: There are two main nerves that are in the area of the carotid artery. Above the bifurcation of the Internal and external carotid is the hypglossal which controls the toungue. If cut, the toungue will deviate to the side of the injury. The other main nerve is the vagus. It is located between the common carotid and int jugular, if cut would be disasterous
