G6pd and toothpaste: In general a 2.5 yr old does not need to use any tooth paste. It is the mechanical friction of the bristles on the teeth which cleans the teeth. Even more important is the diet, no really sticky foods, honey,chocolate, etc. The chemicals that "set off" an episode in someone with G6PD are: "sulfa" antibiotics and certain antimalarials, fava beans, and moth balls. Look for: Look for toothpastes specifically formulated for children. Read the ingredients, avoid any with menthol. Tom's may be a good choice. Test with a tiny amount. Never use more than a pea-sized portion. Because of Med Hx your child should be seeing a Pediatric Dental Specialist, a Pedodontist.
