Jaw dislocation: When dislocation does occur, the patient is in obvious distress with pain that increases at each attempt to close his/her jaw. The mandible is locked open with contact only between the most posterior teeth and an anterior open bite. Preventive treatment involves training the patient to restrict maximum opening range to avoid a recurrence.

One time?Recurrent?: Some patients with a dislocated jaw can self reduce the dislocation. If not, go to an ER or an oral surgeon. With recurrent dislocation that cannot be controlled by patient limiting oral opening, oral surgical procedures are available to cure the problem.
