Named for a Rocket!: Apollo: Viral Conjunctivitis There was an epidemic that presented with discomfort, irritation, watering and redness of the eyes in West Africa and other parts of the globe, which coincided with the landing of the APOLLO 11 on the moon in 1969. This epidemic was caused by an adenovirus and epidemics have been recurrent since then. This is a self-limiting disease and very contagious.
