What are the tests for conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis: For a bacterial conjunctivitis sometimes a culture and slide smear are done to clarify the offending organism. Sometimes a slide smear is used to differentiate between a viral and allergic conjunctivitis. Occasionally a conjunctival biopsy may be required.

Rarely done: This frequent problem rarely requires any testing.The physician takes a history and does an exam.The findings suggest the diagnosis and treatment is prescribed based on past testing of similar cases. If initial treatment is not helping, specific tests may be done.Yet these are seldom done outside of teaching programs or specialist offices.
