Eye Inlammation: Conjunctivitis means that the most superficial layer of the eye (the conjunctiva) is inflamed. This layer is normally clear, with a few arteries and veins, and covers the sclera (the white layer of the eye). When irritation occurs, from chemicals, viruses or bacteria, inflammation causes redness, and we call that conjunctivitis. Treatment depends on the cause of the redness.
