Thinner vs cough: Mucolytics like Mucinex (guaifenesin) or guaneffecin thin out your mucous mucolytic = break up the mucous. Anti tussive suppresses cough. Often some form of codeine.

Cough remedies: A mucolytic like "guaifensin" thins out the mucous and secretions as antitussives like "codeine, or dextromethorphan" are made to suppress a cough. These drugs are often used in combination. Drink plenty of fluids with these . See your physician if cough persists or worsens. Good luck and good health
