Infection, ?Gangrene: This sounds serious. The toe may turn black if there is not adequate blood supply and the tissue is dying. If it is dry and black then it may not be actively infected but is still in need of treatment. If it is mushy and black and smells bad, that is a serious infection that should be treated right away.
