Checking kidneys: A routine examination of the kidneys would consist of lab work, looking at creatinine, potassium, BUN levels, a urine analysis looking for blood or protein and a CBC. If those are normal, not much else needs to be done. If you have an elevated creatinine and/or protein (P) in your urine, a 24 hour urine collection will be needed to see what your kidney function is and how much P you have/day.

Blood and urine.: Urine sample and blood sample. A simple exam to push and pound on your kidney. That's about all we can routinely know about your kidney. Further testing might be indicated if those tests are abnormal.
