A member asked:

Old mom. is closed spina bifida deformity a risk to offspring?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Is it simple?: Spina bifida includes a spectrum of anatomical problems ranging from the most severe (but fortunately rarest) called myelomeningocele wherein the coverings of the spinal nerve sac (dura & arachnoid) are absent allowing nerve roots to herniate sometimes through bony & skin defects to the outside world. Spina bifida occulta is most common & most benign-failure of 2 bones (lamina) to completely unite.
