Need more info...: Factors such as additional testing for HCV viral load, other causes of elevated ALT, liver imaging and nature of the high ALT (rate of increase/ stability of the lab value) and clinical context are important to know. Though an elevated ALT can suggest HCV infection, it is difficult for any doc - other than the doc you saw, to know the significance of the elevated ALT at this point.
