Bowel Sounds: When the physician places their stethoscope on the abdomen, they are able to hear the sounds that the bowel is making. "Normal" bowel sounds are the gurgling noises that the stomach and intestines make during digestion and transit of food through the digestive tract. During illness, doctors may hear hyperactive, hypoactive, or complete absence of bowel sounds.
