Depends on cell type: There are a variety of stem cell types, including embryonic, which reside in a 4 day old embryo; vs.adult stem cells, which reside in mature tissues. Bone marrow stem cells are the only type in routine use and may be harvested from marrow aspirations, peripheral blood mobilization, or umbilical cord blood. Induced progenitor cells may be made in the lab from other cell types through gene therapy.
